Sex. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that sleeping with someone other than his girlfriend is the reason one Chinese man went on a walk he’ll never forget. Chinese social media blew up with coverage of the bizarre event. A public argument over infidelity is one thing. People may slow down to watch. However, when someone trots through a busy city, attached to a leash, and crawling on hands and knees like a dog, traffic stops. And the police show up.

Neither person involved in the weird walk has yet been identified. According to accounts posted on Weibo, the event happened on September 9 in the city of Fuzhou, which is located in Fujian province. Strangers looked on with puzzlement as a woman in a blue dress and high heels walked confidently down a sidewalk near the city center. Two steps behind her was a man crawling on hands and knees. A black leather dog collar around his neck, he struggled to keep up as the woman pulled on a black dog leash attached to the collar. The man wore all black clothing to match his canine accessories.

Witnesses to the strange scene stopped in amazement. Some thought it a joke or promotional stunt, but the intensity of the woman’s commands convinced them otherwise. While waiting for the traffic light to change, she ordered the man to ‘stay’ and petted him on the head. Throughout the exchanges on the streets, the young man did not look up at his girlfriend. Eventually, the commotion of so many people stopping on the sidewalk and in their cars brought police to the scene.

After a 25 minute conversation, law enforcement officers convinced the woman to unleash the man. However, as she did so, she declared that her boyfriend was a dog, not a man. She walked off as the man continued to follow her on hands and knees, even though he was no longer leashed. Police threatened him with a fine unless he stood up. He complied, but still meekly trailed behind his girlfriend, head held low. Public spectacles in China frequently include wives and girlfriends beating up their husbands’ mistresses. However, it is quite rare to witness the public shaming of a man, especially in such a weird fashion.
