How many countless times do children hear, ‘Don’t do that, or you’ll get stuck.’ Yet, for one man in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian, those parental warnings were not enough. As a result, the unnamed man ended up with his head stuck in a washing machine. He also ended up the butt of many jokes on social media, but that’s putting the cart before the horse.

The 37-year-old male from Fuzhou City has worked as a handyman for the last decade. Neighbors called him to repair everything from toilets to electrical wiring. He was always able to get the job done in quick fashion. However, after getting his head stuck in his own washing machine, it wouldn’t be surprising if people stopped calling for his assistance. In this particular situation, he was trying to figure out why the drum was spinning irregularly while washing. Upon realizing that there was an obstruction stuck in the bottom gear, he tried to pull it out. After failing to achieve this, he stuck his head inside to see what the obstruction was caught on. According to a spokesman for the fire department, the handyman knew instantly that he was in trouble.

After attempting to pull his head out for 20 minutes, he gave up and screamed for help. His neighbors heard him and came rushing. After desperately attempting to pull the man out, they gave up and called the fire department. When firefighters arrived, they separated the drum from the machine. They were worried that the trapped man was running out of oxygen. They also wanted to allow the blood that had rushed to his head to dissipate and shrink his head back to its normal size. Over the next ten minutes, firefighters carefully pried open the drum, freeing the man inside. They also located the tattered shirt that had caused the machine to not spin properly.

The man suffered no physical injuries. His pride, however, is a different story. The fact that this incident happened at the same time as a controversial laundry detergent ad resulted in social media lighting up. Posters on Sina Weibo mocked the man, claiming that his wife had found him so unattractive that she had followed the advertisement’s suggestion and tried sticking her husband headfirst into a washing machine.
