McDonald’s Japan is struggling. They still have a relatively large footprint, but their customer totals are down from last year. That helps explain their near-constant gimmicks and limited time offerings. Only a few months ago they introduced the heart attack-inducing Giga Bite Burger. Before that, their disgusting chocolate sauce French fries were the hot ticket item. Nevertheless, McDonald’s latest promotion for two new dipping sauces, Creamy Cheddar Cheese and Fruits Curry, may be their best. With the chance to win an 18-karat gold Chicken McNugget, there’s never been a better time for customers to cash in.
There’s just one problem. A new, dastardly thief has stolen the golden nugget and it is up to customers to track him down. The best translation for the crook’s name, Kaito Nuggets, is Phantom Thief Nuggets. Sporting a yellow suit, magician’s hat, and mask, Kaito Nuggets looks like a banana had sex with the Lone Ranger before tagging in Gob Bluth from Arrested Development. Did we mention that Kaito also has two extra fingers that are actually chicken McNuggets? If all of that isn’t enough to convince you this guy is on the same criminal level as Carmen Sandiego, then maybe his awful dance moves will push you over the edge. McDonald’s Japan has released a commercial for this promotion that rivals the awkwardness of the KFC edible nail polish music video.
That’s the backstory, now here’s the chance to strike it rich. From now until June 28, Phantom Thief Nuggets will be traversing across Japan. He’ll be making appearances at stores, lobbying governors in the prefectures, and throwing out the first pitch at baseball games. Although those were the only events announced by McDonald’s, Kaito Nuggets is bound to show up in surprising and new places, like your nightmares. Wherever he does show up, people are supposed to take his picture and post his location to Twitter using his name as a hashtag. All who tweet are entered into the contest. The winner of this social media scavenger hunt will receive the golden McNugget, valued at $2,000. Twenty-one second place finishers win a 39-day supply of 5-piece chicken McNuggets.
