Why yes, Raja Thapa, I believe we can pencil you into the Guinness Book of World Records. The 19-year-old Nepalese teenager recently set a new record for fitting pencils in his mouth. Determined to continue pushing the envelope, the young man claims that he will not rest until he is universally recognized as the ‘street hero of Nepal.’
Before he achieves such a high standing though, Raja may need some time to rest his jaw. In his effort to establish his name in the hallowed book of records, he decided to challenge one of the weirdest entries. A teacher from India, Dinesh Shivnath Upadhyaya, held the record for most pencils fit in the human mouth. He crammed 92 pencils in his mouth and the record stood for five years. Then Thapa came along and raised the bar even further. Rather than attempting to go slightly above the existing record, the teenager went all out. He eventually was able to fit 138 pencils in his mouth. To start, he put 126 in at once and then fit the remaining twelve pencils into the middle of the bundle. For those keeping track at home, that’s 46 more than the previous record. And also the widest mouth in the world.
To reward the crowd of over 150 spectators who watched him set the record, Raja quickly launched into another display of his oral prowess and physical toughness. He proceeded to light 32 birthday candles and placed the bundle of them in his teeth. Then he titled his head back and let the candles burn down, while hot wax dripped onto his face and neck. As the flames grew closer to his eyes, he finally spit the candles onto the street, receiving a big round of applause.
Relying on the media attention he’s bound to receive for his latest stunts, Raja hopes that he’ll soon be able to quit his job as a security guard at a local shop. He plans to start doing regular street performance shows as well. His goal is to break at least five more world records and take full advantage of his freakishly large mouth to entertain and amaze the world.
