In Japan, fashion trends come and go, and one of 2014’s most looked-into trend was “azuki bean beards.” However, this is not a real fashion trend, but rather a fashion project started by Takao Sakai, an artist known for his food-themed art.

The red beans which are called “azuki” are used in sweets.

His project, called “Azurer,” consists of people wearing azuki bean beards, adorned with candies and other sweets.

“When Japanese look at my works, they immediately recognize them as the azuki beans used in sweets,” he said. “However, people from outside tend to feel them to be enigmatic and gross. I actually like that kind of misunderstanding.” With bean beards, Sakai can give a traditional food a new, ironic twist.

There are 1,720,000 “azurers” taking part in this project as of date.
