Celebrating the 50th year of the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train system, the East Japan Railway Company is set to incorporate foot baths inside new bullet trains travelling from Shinjo to Fukushima.

During the two-hour ride, passengers can enjoy a luxurious foot spa, four at a time. Afterwards, they can proceed to the “after-bath lounge car” to have a taste of locally made sake.

A ride costs US$8 (500 yen).

This special treat will last only three months because the designers say that they, too, have to ensure non-spillage. “We had to be creative, such as placing cushions inside the tubs so that the hot water won’t spill out even when the train sways hard,” Hideyuki Terui says.
