So what exactly is Gangnam style all about? And how did this not-so-flowerboy-looking ahjussi manage to shine and rise to the top?

Produced under YG Entertainment, one of the biggest talent agencies in Korea, Psy’s sixth album was released in mid-July.

The song was meant as a commentary on the rampant materialism and emphasis on appearance of today’s South Korean population — particularly in relation to Seoul’s Gangnam district.

“The YouTube video never targeted foreign countries. It was for local fans,” Psy said.

The response came as a surprise to everyone because Psy became the talk of the town the moment his music video was released. It spread like wildfire, even reaching the U.S. and other countries in just a short time.

The music video has already reached 120+ million views on YouTube, making it the most viewed K-pop video, within just barely two months after its release. It was also listed as the top ranker in the YouTube 100. The cool music, dance choreography, and unusual visuals of the video are what made it special. Not your usual K-pop video, indeed.

Famous artists such as T-Pain, Josh Groban, Katy Perry, Vanessa Hudgens, Brittney Spears, and even Tom Cruise, got hooked on the trend and tweeted about Psy and his music video.
