In July, a dolphin was found in Sanniang Bay, in southern China’s Qinzhou city, swimming out to sea with her baby.

When a tourist boat came closer, the tourists on board realized that the baby dolphin was already dead.

The calf had a long cut across its belly. It is believed that it might have been made by a boat propeller since the area is ridden with dolphin-watching boats.

“The little dolphin was dead for two or three days, but its mother still stayed with it and carried it day and night, which has touched all of us and the tourists,” said Su, a fisherman in the area. “Just like human beings, dolphins also have feelings. A mother’s love is noble and moving.”

This incident has added to what research has already stated, speculating that they not only grieve but also are somehow aware of their own mortality.
