Sanal Edamaruku is in danger of being arrested apparently because he questioned the origin of the supposed miraculous water flowing from the bottom of Christ’s statue in Our Lady of Velankanni Church in Mumbai, India.

Two Catholic laity organizations filed a case against Mr. Edamaruku for “deliberately hurting religious feelings and attempting malicious acts intended to outrage the religious sentiments of any class or community,” as stated in Section 295A of the Indian penal code.

Many have been flocking in the area to consume the water in hope of being cured from many ailments, but Edamarku has spoken out against people’s beliefs, saying that the water isn’t “holy” and that it could in fact be dangerous to people’s health because it seems that the water comes from a clogged drainage system.

Mr. Edamaruku is founder and president of Rationalist International, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, and an honorary associate of the UK Rationalist Association.

He was called in to investigate the source of the water and reported the water oozing out from under the statue isn’t miraculous. Edamaruku even documented his visit to provide evidence in court.

Mr. Edamaruku also said that he regrets nothing in intervening with the beliefs of the people because all he wanted to do was help them open their eyes to reality and be more rational in understanding the things around them.
