Xaio Li, aged 22 meant well when he purchased an $800 gold necklace for his girlfriend’s birthday.

As a special surprise, he hid it in a muffin he baked himself and presented it lovingly to Wang Xue, aged 22, at her birthday party in Qingdao, Shangdong province.

But the surprise was on Li who watched in abject horror as she swallowed the muffin and its costly contents in just one gulp before he could utter a single word.

“I thought it would show how much I love her and it would be a good joke too…but before I could say anything, she’d swallowed it in one bite and I had to tell her the truth on the way to hospital,” said Li sadly.

An x-ray revealed the necklace resting comfortably in her stomach. Surgeons removed it during endoscopic surgery by extending a probe down her throat and into her stomach.

All’s well that ends well as one bearded Elizabethan bard so eloquently used to say, but Wang fears his beloved will never feel comfortable wearing the expensive bauble again because of it association with the surgery.

Li should give himself a break.

After all, as that old song says, life is just a bowl of…muffins with gold necklaces baked inside of them, no?
