Founded in February of 2001, Ordos, whose name translates from the Mongolian into “palaces,” is an enigmatic riddle. It is an empty city although it is inhabited and it is richer by far than the nation’s capitol, Beijiing.
Explanations are in order. The city’s 1,548,000 could hardly classify it as a ghost town as far as population numbers go, but much of its futuristic infrastructure is over-developed, unused and under-designed.
The growth of Ordos is positively absurd; its density remains 17.8 people per square kilometer. By comparison, New York City has 157.91 habitants per square kilometer.
It took five years to build this ghost town with funds created by a $585 billion stimulus package meant to bolster China’s economy despite its painful recession. The Inner Mongolian city was meant to accommodate some one million residents and yet it remains empty.
Filled with office towers, administrative centers, government buildings, museums, theaters, sports fields and acres of subdivisions bursting with residential space, there remains only one small problem. No one lives there!
Ordos’s low population is oddly matched by its high income, which is due to its nearby coal mines and other rich natural resources which include: textile (wool), petrochemicals, electricity generation and production of building materials.
As far as the rest of China is concerned, Ordos retains the second highest per capita income, after Shanghai. Construction management companies insist that all units have been sold (purchased by investors), but for whatever reason, no one is moving in!
If Ordos ever takes off the way it was originally planned, there is little doubt that the result will be a great return on the original investment.
One can only surmise that old saying about “build it and they will come” doesn’t always work. Cities are more successful when their expansion correlates with the needs of its population.
They can’t work like recipes and be built from scratch.
‘Come and eat this’ simply isn’t the same as ‘come and live here’.
What do YOU think about this?
I'd move there. Seems like my kind of place.

plastic trash place for slaves
New York City has a population density of 10,606 people per square kilometer. New York STATE has a density of 157.81.
It’s weird that China, a country with the 2/5 of world’s population have a ghost city! On the contrary that city seems to be a paradise to live in and i’d definitely live there, so it’s the goverment or the investors that don’t allow people to live there! And of course it’s mediocre position in china’s west far a lot from sea and other trade ways

Actually South of Mongolia or as u called it West China is in middle of trade ways. However colony of China called colonial name "Inner Mongolia" is a place for Mongols-slaves of Han'-Mandarin-Chinese people. Han' people are 92% of whole China and dominate of other nations colonized by them. Genocidal politics of Han'-Mandarins destroyed Mongols, TIbet people, Uighur people and other 200 nations and ethnics. This is communistic China with no religion. They adapted Budda from Mongols. But Han's themselves have no believes, only philosophy. Since those commy chinese have no GOD they are same like a fashists in Germany. ANd Germany had a GREAT ECONOMY before World War 2. So actually Commy government of China move Han's to Mongolia against a will. This is an easiest way to control rebelling Mongols – under Han'-Mandarin population. Politics of last century, adapted from Hitler and Stalin.

"INNER MONGOLIA" is a colonial name of south part of Mongolia separated from rest of COUNTRY – MONGOLIA. USSR and commy Peoples Republic of China teared apart great country of Mongolia. USSR colonized North and called it "BURYATIA". Han'-Mandarins colonized and destroyed south of Mongolia. Now they built plastic houses for Han' people to move to Mongolia to keep control of Mongols by han'-mandarins population. So easy no rebels no revolutions for freedoms anymore. By the way people of "INNER MONGOLIA" are UNREPRESENTED NATION. They have no rights to speak their own language, to practice their religion or travel. Mongols, Kazakhs, Uigurs of "INNER MONGOLIA" are not recognized as an ethnic group in "People's" republic of china. This population suffered of genocidal politics of Han'-Mandarins and stay their as a Han's slaves.
