Recently some restaurants in Guangdong, China, have been promoting a popular dish called “water boiled live catâ€.
The way the restaurants kill the cats is very cruel and inhumane. One of the chefs even says “the more torture the cats receive, the better they taste.â€
They use a bat and beat the cats until they pass out; then throw them into hot water and boil them alive, then de-skin and cook them again.
One restaurant in Pan Yu district, even has a cat “shelter†in their back yard.
Customers go out back and pick which cat they want to eat and the chef will beat the chosen cat half to dead and boil it alive. Not just wild cats end up on the dinner table, some high class cats like Persians will end up a meal as well.
The Menu offers the following choices and prices:
- Cat meatï¿¥10 ($1.25)/lb
- Cat’s brain ï¿¥30 ($3.5)/lb
- Cat’s intestine ï¿¥50 ($6.4)/lb
Lets just hope this is not another prelude to a SARS breakout like before.

I worked in a chicken slaughterhouse here in Canada and all i can say is this: the main difference between chicken and cats is the way we love them, not the way we kill them.
No anmal killing is ever pleasant. Either you assume the animal you are eating has been KILLED or either you become a vegetarian. It’s a choice you make.

I’m not against people eating meat, but I say that if you want to eat meat – and you want to rationalize that it’s natural (which it is in some cases), you should it the natural way – that being you have to go hunt and process the food yourself. I highly doubt very many people can go out and catch their own food, or can butcher the animal. There’s a certain level of brutality needed to do that, and most humans are incapable of doing it and so they rely on butchers to do it.
Anyways my views are unpopular because the majority of people don’t want to think about how food ends up on their plate. But this is definitely even more disgusting because the ASSHOLES took pleasure in torturing the animals (a symptom which is considered the first sign of psychotic behaviour – enjoyment in torturing animals). In summary, a cat deserves now a more merciful death in China than a negro in Alabama about 60 years ago (or a friggin’ wetback in Arizona today).
Boiling and skinning alive a cat before eating it (which I also find disturbing and depraved) is completely unethical, but offending some religions such as Hinduism is ok cuz, after all, that New York steak is so damn good! And of course I am completely positive that that cow was treated humanely before and while killing it, I witnessed myself how it was killed!

Yes we know that saying well – in fact tour guides often quote it when warning their visitors about the food they just may happen to eat without really knowing what it is or how it came to be on their plate 🙁 I get annoyed with people who say ‘ how could they do that to cats ‘ when I shout HOW COULD THEY DO THAT TO ANY LIVING CREATURE !? It doesn’t matter WHAT ANIMAL it is – the respect for the life of any animal is important and animals must be treated humanely no matter what ‘ industry ‘ is exploiting their being ! We know that it is a minority of people who are responsible for such acts, in any given country where we read about horrific animal cruelty. And I am so thankful for those in China who are standing up and fighting to end this cruelty ! It is difficult, because we know that the cruelty does not only apply to animals – that there is much going on behind closed doors ( well not so closed any more because the news is getting out finally ) about other crimes that are happening there against China’s people too !
Please tell us – what is it that WE can do to help end the cruelty, to help end the suffering of China’s animals and people ? Boycott products, Boycott the Olympics ? Tell us – and we will spread the word …. I for one am at a loss as to what is the most effective campaign to put into action !

I think you are missing the point. There are three schools of thought as I see it. 1) Killing animals for food is wrong. 2) Killing animals for food in the most humane way possible is acceptable 3) Killing animals for food in whatever way possible is acceptable, including torture.
I eat meat, so I subscribe to (2). It would be hypocritical of me to condemn anyone for eating cat, but I have a duty to condemn anyone brutally torturing an animal before they eat it. It is wrong under ANY circumstance, and should be punishable by law.

Rarely are dogs vaccinated for rabies in China. When an outbreak of rabies occurs, which it often does, they kill ALL the dogs. If you are walking with your pet..they’ll take it and club it to death, right before your eyes.

Japan has it’s horrors – trust me – where you can go and sit at a table, have a live monkey brought to you in a restraining devise – the top of the monkey’s head is slided off – hot oil poured over it’s brains and you eat while the animal is still very much alive – !

I have read an article of this inhumane treatment of monkeys in China, but believe me, I am from Japan and lived there long enough to know that such evil practice DOES NOT EXIST. Believe me, monkeys are sacred in Japan, nobody comes to an idea of eating them, and I didn’t know anybody who did or wanted to try whale meat, I didn’t know anybody who was for whaling. People there care much for stray animals as I have done. I searched last night and have found articles on it – and then I telephoned my in Toronto yesterday who’s son is married to a girl there and they said that they had spoken about it being in their paper there – not being done there – it was in a JAPANESE NEWSPAPER but not done there in Japan – it has been done in China – and other Asian countries but it is not a common thing apparently re eating the brains of a live monkey – but they do eat ‘ brains ‘ ( sounds like back home in Greece with the goat and sheep heads – eating brains and eye’s ! )

I am vegetarian for that reason exactly. I don't think living breathing creatures that feel pain should be harmed. Animals shouldn't be considered better, or have a higher status than others. What would happen if there are all of a sudden "better" beings than us, smarter, faster, stronger, bigger. Leaving aside the issue of inflicting pain by clubbing, what’s the difference between eating a cat and eating a pig? It’s simply cultural differences. Although I would not eat a cat or a dog, I don’t see what the difference is between eating them and another mammal (excluding humans of course). In principle, there is nothing wrong with consuming other organisms such as insects which are very nutritious. You people need to step back a little and look past your particular cultural conditioning.

I think a big part of the issue is the belief that adrenaline release makes the meat tastier, such that torturing the animal is promoted. In the US we *attempt* to minimize the suffering of our food animals.
There are certainly exceptions here (de-beaked chicken, for example), but the general cultural trend is to push for a quicker, less painful death.

Now that depends on what farm you happen to be visiting and where !!!!!! The outbreak of foot and mouth here in the UK 6 years ago was caused from just that – even though it isn’t supposed to be done ‘ legally ‘ any more – who is there to watch what goes on – ! I agree. We have been conditioned that dogs and cats are pets. But, we think nothing of putting a live lobster in a pot of boiling water or slaughtering a pig. We love our beef but dont bring that up to people in India. Each culture has their conditioning and we need to accept that. Just because they dont think exactly like us doesn't mean they're wrong. It only means their beliefs, because of their condiftioning, is different.

true, we got similar with pigs after all..some are PETS and some even on the same farm or family were destined for dinner. A farmers world is a bit more harsh in its realities but then thats nature. It is both beautiful and grotesque. Some who live it, get used to it. If anything, it shows the higher affinity for compassion within that individual. China and Japan have always been culturally isolated (as evident from early history). It’s their geography. That is why they appear to be so different.
For someone to make bogus statements about the U.S. is another thing. The idea of a “pet” has been around for millennia. Like the egyptians for example, they had pet cats. Its a custom that is still present today. There is no need to be overly practical. Owning a pet is personal choice for a citizen, and doesn’t have any correlation to our concern for Africa.

Can’t we agree that all TORTURE of animals is wrong? I eat meat, I’ve been a vegetarian and a vegan and I’ve found that it’s not only easier but in many ways healthier to eat some meat. Not a t-bone every night, but chicken and fish are a great way to get proteins, etc. But in no way would I advocate TORTURING of chicken or fish (or any animal or human) which is what is happening to these cats. I don’t think it’s wrong to kill a cat, I had my cat put to sleep while holding it in my arms…he was dying slowly from cancer anyhow. And yes, we torture animals in the US too, that’s why it’s OUR responsibility to eat meat we can be confident in as being the least tortured. We’ll never really know how well the animal lived, but getting ‘free range’, ‘organic’, and local/not mega farmed (most importantly from an environmental standpoint), is our only choice unless you want to raise or hunt the animal yourself.
Quit bitching about the poor animals being killed for our benefit. You can kiss your developed brain and office job goodbye if you think we’d be better off without meat. But there is a way to eat and kill animals humanely, that is the issue with these cats.

I served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. I was stationed up north. The people would eat dog, rats and cats. The cats were not boiled alive. They were cooked much like most of the northern Vietnamese prepared their foods. They were cut up and stir fried in a wok. Cat was considered a delicacy. They also made a sauce out of fish scales and various spices. This would ferment and was then served over rice or rice noodles. They could be starving, but would not eat the water buffalo. They were much needed to work the rice paddies

Look every country has its delicacies and some are more disgusting than others. In this case they are eating what we consider a pet. Most of us don’t eat our pets unless they weren’t supposed to be a pet in the first place and were raised for meat. I do not like the concept of boiling the cats alive but if this is part of the preparation process who are we to tell another culture that they should do things differently? We need to be more concerned with our own inadequacies before we start throwing our over blown opinions around to the rest of the world. We do things here that make cat bashing pretty blasé so do some investigating in your own back yard and get that cleaned up before trying to impose your disgust on another culture. Besides this is not the only country that eats what we consider to be household pets. Other Asian countries eat dog; other countries including our own eat horse. Maybe we don’t boil them alive and we feel they way we kill something to eat is more acceptable but we kill it just the same.

I am confronted daily by people’s general ignorance as far as animal cruelty is concerned. we sit in front of our televisions at night, eating steaks and chops, while the evening news pumps out stories of the cat lady down the street who has neglegted her 3 goats , 2 horses, and 15 chickens, to our horror… meanwhile, as we chomp away at our pork chops……we are completely shut off from the truth of where our scrumptious meat dinners are coming from…..these animals that adorn our plates are of the same brain and emotional level as Fido and fluffy, but do not earn a place in society because of the pure fact that they have been permanantly placed at a lower level of humankind’s idea of …”cute”. I’m sorry, mr pig, and ms cow….just not cute enough for me to pet…so instead you are destined to a life of cruelty and negligence until you die an equally cruel death ( your only true mercy) until you end up on my plate while I watch the 6 o’clock news hoping the cat lady down the street gets what she deserves….

I get that people in other countries enjoy certain things as delicacies, that most people in the US do not. What I do NOT understand is the torture & abuse that the animals endure on the way to the consumer. I watched a documentary on HBO, many years ago, where they showed how they catch the animal (in this case cats), beat the animal into unconciousness, then throw it alive into a vat of scalding water, to loosen the skin, take it out, skin it (STILL ALIVE), & then throw it back in the vat to cook! I’m sorry, & yes I AM a pet lover, but even if I wasn’t, this would disgust me beyond reason! I have since tried to find this documentary, so that I can show others this horrific practice (which was one of many scenes of animal cruelty on the video). It is sickening, but I feel others should know just HOW bad it is in these countries for some animals.

The difference between boiling lobsters and cats alive are HUGE. First of all, many studies show that lobsters do not even feel pain. Second of all.. even if they did, they would only feel it for a second or so. They DIE almost instantly after hitting the boiling water. Cats feel the pain. The worst thing i have EVER seen was a chinese chef, who held down a cat, tied its legs together, then SKINNED IT ALIVE, and put it to one side, while his pot of water boiled. This was shown on, channel 4 or channel five in the UK, about eight years ago. I know of other people who saw it, and cant get it out of their heads either.

Humans are omnivores so they can consume meat. Cats themselves are carnivores and pray on smaller animals. Usually the animal kills the pray by biteing the neck which causes a quick oxygen starvation to the brain and unconsciousness within a few seconds. As far as i know there is no creature in the world that boils its pray after beating it. (read between the lines). By the way boiling a living organism is the most excruciating death ever possible. Billions of nerve endings are stimulated (can you imagine that?)and death is slow due to the preservation of vital organs and adrenaline induced increase of blood flow to the brain keeping the animal very alive. 2. I go to Panyu, China 6 or 8 times a year and have never seen this… Im not at all suggesting its false but just that its not as prevelant as you all seem to be inferring that it is from one post. The Chinese I know don’t torture their food, or beat cats. Many of them have small dogs for pets and right there in Panyu there is a big dog show (I think) twice a year, Ive seen it twice anyway. These posts SO unfairly villify the Chinese and it pains me to read them because all of the Chinese nationals who I have ever met or interacted with, and thats a lot of people, have been extremly nice to me and have bent over backward to help me when Ive needed it. They are good and generous people. Think of all of the terrible things foreign media in say the middle East spews about us and how wrong it is or how it takes some unrelated event or group and then tries to make it seem we all support it or are like that. ok, to start off, i’ve been working in kitchens for a number of years now. there is a fundamental difference between Cats and Lobster (a debate that keeps resurfacing in these responses) cat, being a mammal would actually taste worse if it was tortured, due to secretions from pain and fear. that being said, a cat is certainly not self aware “pain” to a cat is simply self preservation, they don’t feel it the same way a human would.
lobsters on the other hand, MUST be cooked alive to be able to be eaten properly, and allthough they do feel pain, they essentially are simple insects, they don’t so much have a brain as they do a simple nervous system. lobster is INCREDIBLY low on the intelligence scale, and unlike cat, if you look at it ethically, it HAS to be cooked alive.
and for christ sake, stop arguing the ethics of eating animals at all, the most retarded comment i saw was about how we should have to hunt our animals, hate to break it to you folks, but we -ARE- above animals, they are not equal, a pitifully small percent of animals in nature are even self aware, unfortunately we mistake cunning, instincts, and playfulness for intelligence. if a cat is raised for it, then it is a valid food source, we are omnivores, look at your teeth, we have both types needed for plant and meat eating. and to be generally healthy, we should really balance both.

The people crying over this topic make me laugh. How can you call these acts barbaric? Why… because you have one as a pet here in the States? There are ‘no’ animal rights in China, and there never will be; so anything that walks on four legs is fair game.
The country is overrun with strays that clutter the city streets, and, I might add, contributed to some of the diseases that struck China in the late 1990s. These people are very poor, and when you’re starving, a few hundred ‘missing’ strays (out of hundreds of thousands – that’s right – hundreds of thousands in certain major cities) won’t be missed.

Cats have been persecuted for centuries, for religious reasons and because males associate them with females and ‘evil’.The Black Plague in Europe may have been less severe if so many cats had not been exterminated in the name of superstition. I used to live in Northern Thailand, near the Laos border. I would frequently see the villagers eating cats. One day, on a bet, I decided to try some. It was not bad. There was not enough meat on the bones of cat I had but I would think that some of the fat cats in the States might be quite tasty. I will give it a go again the next time I am back there. Don't knock it until you try it, you might just like it.

I too was angered by this article. Not only as a pet owner but as a human being. What next will they do this with homeless people. It is disgusting, but I can believe it. I live in Barberton, Ohio and a few years ago a Chinese restaurant was busted by the police. Why? Because they were going to Lake Anna, catchiing the geese and using them as food for their restaurant. Granted not all people or cultures are bad, but things like this artcle make you loose respect for them. The people who order the food and the cooks should also be boiled alive.

I live in Scotland and frequently see chinese women wearing real fur,its never the brits…..do they actually look at what goes on? or do they just love being ignorant, pretending it doesnt happen? i've seen fish being grated alive in China….ive seen cats, racoon dogs, foxes, mink, rabbits being skinned alive, screaming and screaching in pain, its an absolute disgrace! i swear i will never visit China, NEVER. The main problem is not that some people cannot accept that other cultures eat cat, dogs, etc. It all boils down to the pain and suffering inflicted upon an innocent creature. This applies to the USA as well. It's bad enough we kill or condone the killing of animals because we can, but to treat a living creature so inhumanely is absolutely horrific.
