A 51-year-old unemployed man has been arrested for using a stolen bicycle to ride 450 kilometers from Oita Prefecture to Kogoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, police said.
Koichi Hisamatsu, of no fixed address, has admitted to the allegations. “I wanted to visit somewhere warm,” he told officers.
Hisamatsu found a bicycle dumped along a road in Yufu, Oita Prefecture, on May 7, after it was stolen from a 45-year-old woman in the city.
He rode the bicycle on a weeklong trip to Kagoshima Prefecture. A police officer questioned Hisamatsu in Minamisatsuma at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday to learn that he had used the stolen bicycle. Hisamatsu was in possession of 345 yen at the time.
“I never expected it to be found in Kagoshima Prefecture,” the bicycle’s owner said. “I am pleased now. My daughter will use it next year.”
