Without question, it sucks to miss a train as you run toward it. However, most people accept that there are some limitations on what you would do to catch that train. Relatively high on that list is not endangering the lives of others, especially your own child. Unfortunately, for one man in China, video footage and platform attendants caught him using his toddler’s stroller, with the child inside, to hold open a subway’s closing doors.
When Nanning’s new Metro Line 1 opened a few days ago, officials never expected a flood of negative news coverage. The city, located in southern China, hoped the 20-mile public transportation network would further add to its reputation as China’s ‘Green City.’ Instead, everyone is seeing red.
Footage of the incident shows the father, wearing a pink vest, getting off an elevator. He is pushing his son, dressed in a yellow coat, in a black stroller. By that time, the yellow warning light was already flashing, signaling that the doors were closing and that passengers should wait for the next train. As the doors closed, the negligent parent thrust the stroller into the gap. The video shows the child’s head slammed forward as the doors close on the stroller. Only at the last second does the kid’s head snap back, narrowly avoiding the still-closing doors.
People on both the train and platform were horrified as they saw the father running toward the train. Although the father and son successfully made it onto the train, authorities at the next stop questioned the man and checked on the child’s health. The toddler was fine and the father did not receive any criminal charges. Users on China’s social media platform, Weibo, felt he should be charged with child endangerment. No word, yet, on the punishment the man’s wife unleashed on him for using their son as a doorstop. As for the man’s place in the Worst Father of the Year Contest, he is better than 2015’s winner. In that case, the champion sold his infant daughter to buy an iPhone and motorbike.
