Chinese Zoo Under Fire for Passing Off Dog As Lion
Posted on September 4, 2013
In what may be one of the most blatant rip-offs made by Chinese zookeepers, a dog was allegedly passed off as a lion to keep profits rolling in.
The lion, it turns out, was a Tibetan mastiff, belonging to a zoo worker.
Now the zoo is under intense public scrutiny and criticism as more “ordinary” animals are found, allegedly meant to replace exotic ones, such as dogs replacing wolves, and rats placed in a snake cage.
The Telegraph’s Beijing bureau reports that recently, Chinese zoos have been battling with government rules banning for-profit animal shows. And to keep the shows profitable, real exotic animals are replaced with lookalikes, no matter how obvious the cheat may seem.
