India’s New Chief Minister Donates Laptops to Poor Students…With a Twist

Free laptops, anyone? I’m pretty sure most of us would not think twice and would take advantage of this opportunity.

India’s new chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, gave new laptops to poor students, just as he had promised, after winning against former Dalit leader Mayawati.

So what’s weird about that? After students tried changing the computers’ settings or even changing the images on the home screen, the £210 (US$317) laptops crashed — as if they were programmed to shut down if pictures of the minister were removed.

Tabrez Khan, a recipient of the said gadget, commented that the laptops arrived with a picture of Mr. Yadav as the home screen.

“I was trying to partition the hard disc, and was also trying to change the image when the system crashed.”

New guidelines will be released by the new government regarding proper use of the laptops.
