Famous Paintings Recreated with Just One Spiral Line

Chan Hwee Chong is an artist from Singapore living in Hamburg, Germany who has an unusual and highly precise artistic talent.

Inspired by line-art drawings, he has recreated classical works of art that include Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait and Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earring.

Commissioned by pen maker Faber and Castell to demonstrate the versatility of their artistic pens, Chong’s work is so strictly defined that if he makes a single mistake, he starts all over again.

“It wasn’t as easy as we thought. We went through many rounds of trial and error, painstakingly drawing the masterpieces in one controlled line, by hand…This project not only involved skill but lots of resilience and patience, much like a spider spinning its web,” Chong told the press.

Each re-creation is one spiral line, but requires thousands of brush strokes and the subtle showcasing of the pen’s precision and control — a formidable challenge to this immensely talented artist.

Chong is an art director at the German design studio Kolle Robbe, which is located in Hamburg, where he lives with his wife, Carolyn, and two children.

The three pieces took several months to complete as he had to patiently start over many times.

In Chong’s spare time, he works on graphic design projects and installation art projects.

A man of immense talent, Chong continues to amaze his peers, and no doubt would also impress the masters he has chosen to emulate.
