Slut Walk in Mumbai Slated For October 2

Posted on September 5, 2011

Things are not always what they seem and the concept of freedom is no exception. It is sometimes an ideal that is just out of reach, like that brass ring on the whirling carousel of life. At other times, it is entangled in thoughts and dreams that seem inimical and confusing.

Maal Chaal translates into slut walk and the derisive word is meant to draw attention and elicit anger as a symbol of stereotyping based on what a woman is wearing.

The choice to wear provocative clothing isn’t always the most prudent for obvious reasons, but that does not change the fact that it is a woman’s choice to make and doesn’t give anyone else the right to attack her.

Certainly bidding for attention when it might not be wanted can lead to trouble, but no mater how a person dresses or how they act, they have the right to be safe and unharmed.

The Mumbai slut walk is the result of positive reactions from the New Delhi slut walk of a few months ago. Known as Maal Chaal, this walk for liberation may well spread all across India with the help of instant communication generated by social media like Facebook.

It is expected that the walk in Mumbai will even bigger and more successful than that in New Delhi. The protests have turned sparks of anger into pure rage, and a battalion of women are driven by the need to shock people out of their stereotypical attitudes and prejudices.

Empowered by their western counterparts, Indian women are slowly but surely standing up against the way they are being treated as objects to be ogled and disrespected.

The time has come for a change in attitudes. Respect is due for everyone for who they are and not for what they seem to be.
