Grace of God Protects Indian Holy Bank Deposits
Most of us live by an honorable personal code that keeps us on the mostly straight and sort of narrow path of doing the right thing.
In the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the Ram Ram Bank is unusual indeed for it offers its clients no security whatsoever.

There are no locks, guards or security gates anywhere in or near the bank and the monetary deposits of thousands of customers from all across the nation are stacked unguarded on shelves, protected from theft by the sole grace of God.
Despite the lack of any conventional bank benefits such as interest or loans, the cramped room in the small house has some 5,000 customers who are honored to deposit documents and cash bearing the name of God.
“There is no need for security as there is no fear of any theft. People feel better by writing God’s name as it becomes a medium to release their pent up frustrations and eventually the faith makes them work toward their goals,” says Lovelesh Tewari, who founded the bank 25 years ago.
The bank is extremely democratic and all religions and professions are welcome. Depositors represent a cross section of society and range from bureaucrats and politicians to even members of the judiciary.
Customers scribble “Ram” (who was the mythological hero of the Ramayana epic) on pieces of paper as many as 100,000 times and then deposit them in the bank. Scribbles on old newspaper and on cigarette packs used to be acceptable but now Tewari provides proper notebooks for the purpose
Every six months the stacks of “deposits” are sent to a temple in Ayodhya, the birthplace of Ram where they are displayed.
Ram Ram is so popular that branches have been opening up in other cities as well.
It would seem that the Ram Ram Bank truly takes the mantra In God We Trust as literally as possible.
For all others, identification is required.
