Japan’s Mysterious Traveling Snake Lady

Traveling throughout Japan is an unnamed ‘snake lady’ who charges 800 yen (9.5 USD) for a performance like you’ve never seen before.

This middle-aged, white-faced woman bites off the head of a snake (in Ozzy fashion, no doubt), and then eats it in front of the audience. Not too much is known about her, except that she’s been doing this since at least 2006 (see video).

Her final performance for 2010 occurred on November 19th, when she appeared at the Hanazono Shrine in Tokyo in celebration of the tori no ichi festival. According to reporters, she ended the brief but amazingly exciting performance by blowing fire from her mouth.

Unfortunately reporters weren’t allowed to take pictures or even record the actual performance. We were however able to obtain a video of the same lady (supposedly, though she looks quite younger in it) from 2006.
