Huge Glow-in-the-Dark Pearl on Sale in China

Pictured below is the one of the biggest luminous pearl gemstones to ever be put up for sale. It’s price? Just a measly 2-2 billion yuan, or 331 million US dollars.

The pearl was originally discovered in China about three years ago. It took the discovery team over three years to turn it from a big, jagged rock into the beautiful, perfectly round pearl that it is today. It’s now approximately 5ft tall and over 12,000 pounds heavy.

Surprisingly, it isn’t the only one in China, though it certainly is one of the largest. These sort of green pearls are known as ‘Yemengzhu,’ and they’ve long played a role in Chinese legends. According to Oddity Central, some people even believe that touching one will “bring great fortunate and prosperity.”

What’s especially interesting is that the first piece of Yemengzhu was discovered only 20 years ago. Even more shocking is that it cannot be found anywhere else, except for China. The largest ever discovered thus far was sold in 2007 for a whopping 3.1 billion yuan, or 466 US dollars.

In particular, the pearl above is composed primarily out of a special Fluorite material that glows blue green in the dark. I imagine that it could easily light up an entire room, , what with it being so large.

Regardless, if you’d like a closer look, you’ll have to travel to Wenchang, China, where it’s on display and also available for sale—though there are no interested buyers as of yet.
