Chinese Granny Saves The Day
Who says heroes or heroines have to be less than 65 years of age? Perhaps they even decide on their own prime. Case in point; Granny Cai, who has become a local celebrity in Fuzhou, Fujian province, China, as a result of her sincere efforts to control traffic at a busy pedestrian crossing.
She jumps between lanes of traffic on a busy road with all the agility of a trained dancer, driven by her need to prevent travelers (both motorists and pedestrians) from breaking the safety rules of the road.
She risks her own safety as she jumps in front of vehicles who try to cross at the wrong time and grabs pedestrians who dare to traverse when the light is red.
“I am nearing the end of my life and I wanted to do something useful for other people before I go. Some people shout at me or ignore my instructions and some even throw nasty words at me, but I just tell them peacefully that it’s for their own safety,” says Cai.
Cai is devoted to reducing the number of traffic accidents that occur in the city and is determined to continue her “forceful” volunteer work for as long as she physically can.
This traffic job gives Cai drive, purpose and the strength to get up each morning and make a difference. Her devotion to her fellow residents is touching in its own very special and unique way.
Perhaps someone paid to do this dangerous traffic job would not perform with the same verve and sincerity as our super senior citizen.
