Japanese “Mosquito” Reveals Your Date’s Real Age
Japan is famous for producing tiny electronic devices with, shall we say, unique purposes. In the past, we’ve seen devices for helping women understand the minds of men and making sure you take the right amount of bites when eating. Now, the latest electronic novelty making headlines in Japan promises to help you tell if your date is telling the truth about their age.

Picture this: You’ve been set up on a blind date. You’re sitting at dinner with this person you’ve just met, and you’ve begun to wonder exactly how old they are. Is your date jailbait, or old enough to qualify for AARP? Enter the “toshibareru mosukitosaundo”, which translates roughly as Mosquito Sound Age Prediction Machine.
The concept is simple. As people age, their hearing tends to diminish. One of the first signs of age-related hearing loss is the inability to hear very high pitched noises. The Age Prediction Machine has four noise settings that can allegedly determine whether the person you’ve been set up with on a blind date is a teenager, a twenty-something, a 30 year old, or someone over the age of 40. The device can also be used for practical jokes, or just to annoy your friends.

The Age Prediction Machine comes in black and hot pink, and runs on two button cell LR44 batteries. The device sells for 880 Yen, plus 44 Yen in tax (which works out to about $10). But once you factor in shipping from overseas, it might easily cost double that amount.
At that price, it’s probably just cheaper to lean across the table and ask your date what decade they were born in… even if it means that they storm out and leave you to foot the bill.

Are we that shallow that age really matters this much?

Haha, I think this is more of a: "I hope this chick isn't underage." type device. Understandably so.
