Japanese Mental Clinic Plays Mind Tricks on Visitors

Sliding bookcases and doors hidden behind wall panels are concepts normally associated with eccentric geniuses living in expansive mansions. Thus, it is all the more surprising that MD.net Clinic Akasaka, a mental clinic in Japan, has incorporated such features into their brand new facility.

Designed by a group called Nendo, the clinic showcases architectural designs and interior décor that seem to guarantee a mind-bending experience.

Thus, none of the actual doors of the facility can be opened. Instead, small sections of the walls have been tweaked to act as doors.

In this way, both patients and staff members can pull open these bits, complete with mounted wall decoration and accessories, to access the clinic’s rooms.

Strangely enough, there is one single door in the entire facility that can be used in the usual way.

This is the one located at the end of the corridor and leads to a view of the outer surrounds.

As for the consultation rooms, these can be accessed by pushing aside the bookcases located around the clinic.

While the choice of design might seem bizarre at first glance, the designers had their own reasons for this strange choice.

They believed that such alterations would encourage a paradigm-shift for visitors and staff alike, enabling them to be more open-minded.

Sounds messed up. Patients are coming to establish or re-establish a sense of reality, and you pull a mindf**k on them. And then you emphasise the weirdness to friends and family, many of whom struggle to understand mental illness, and you have a recipe for long-term stays with no visits.

Maybe they are trying maintain their business. If you cure the patients, they’ll stop going to mental clinics. But if you keep them crazy, they will need mental clinics.
