It's custardy and flanny, especially depending on which kind you get- the prepackaged refridgerated kind are more jelly-like and the homemade kind are more custardy- likewise prepared brown topping is jelly like- but the actual homemade brown topping is caramelized sugar. It's name translates to "pudding" ("pu ding"), so if you hear about a Japanese/Chinese pudding product/flavor referred to only as pudding, this is it. It's the Japanese/Chinese version of flan.
