Customer Beaten to Death by Walmart Employees

At Walmart, theft is not tolerated. At least not at the Walmart in Jingdezhen, China, where a customer died at the hands of Walmart employees who suspected her of stealing.

It started out when one of the Walmart employees suspected a female customer of theft. The customer was then under surveillance for a few minutes before being approached by the staff.

The Walmart employee requested to search the customer’s bag and the female customer refused to hand it over, stating that it was a violation of her privacy.

Next thing she knew, more Walmart employees gathered around her and started beating her up.

The customer managed to send an alert to her family through her cellphone and when her mother and sister showed up at the store, the staff members were still pummeling her. They begged and pleaded for them to stop but to no avail.

Finally, the police showed up and put a stop to the incident and the victim was then rushed to the hospital.

Unfortunately, she died of wounds shortly afterwards.

So far, Walmart has not commented on the incident and it is unknown if any of the employees were arrested.

Maybe we should wait for the story and facts to be verified before you all scream your racist crap. It's this kind of presumption of other countries' inferiority to the US that makes you so vilified around the world. Right now your lifestyle is propped up by trillions of loans from the Chinese government, and cheap WalMart products made by Chinese people in awful working conditions (that WalMart would be prosecuted for were they to exist in the US).

The English versions don't even say if she actually was shoplifting, just suspected of it.
If that's all it took, they'd be killing half their customer base inside of a couple years.
I've been accused of shoplifting for counting my change and putting it back in my pocket.
(The scum didn't even apologize afterward, but that store lost my business forever.)
Hope the police arrest everyone involved in the beating and charge them with Homicide.
If so, the security tapes will be great evidence.

I think if the lady customer showed her bag to the security or Wal-Mart staffs to proof that she's innocent, then the whole incident could be avoided.Anyhow what's the human rights for?Didn't the States govt emphasize the force of human rights? They've no rights to punish a person without a proof showing that the lady is a shoplifter or even they have the evidence of proofing the customer is a thief, the only way they could do is to contact the police officer but not beaten her to death. These guys are insane and inhumanity,it's ideal to lock them up in cell.

The thing that gets me is "stating that it was a violation of her privacy", that's not a very Chinese thing to say, I've been living here for a long time and never heard the word once, which leads me to think that translation was stretched somewhat. Plus I'd assume she was stealing, I've done some stuff that looks pretty sus and so have my Chinese friends and no problem. She had to be doing something.

So the major question is, did she have anything in her possession that was theirs? If not this whole context of killing shop lifters is up in the air. Now I think a random beating of wal mart patrons might be good, not to death by any means, but maybe a large wiffle ball bat and some angry teens might get thing fight back in some of the people that go in there.

Side note: I wonder how awesome the prices are there, I mean everything in wal mart is made in china.

And if you have money, you can get away with anything in China, even murder.

Typical Chinese reaction to anyone acting against authority. Reminds me of Tianamen Square massacre and the poor families that complained because the Chinese government bulldozed their homes to make space for stadiums and new buildings for the 2008 Olympics. Also people that handout 'controversial' material deemed by the authoritarian Chinese government are snatched away in unmarked vans. And yes I have seen it happen with my own eyes on several occasions in Beijing.

Certain Privacy rights don't exist inside stores. I am not sure about China, but all walmarts I go into (and other stores like Target, Costco etc.) have a sign that says something to the effect of "All bags, backpacks and purses are subject to search, or must be left at the door", which i interpret as, if you agree to bring you bag in, you consent to the search.

  45. Comment by Danzig

    September 8th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

They have no authority to enforce this though. If they physically restrain you from leaving it is wrongful imprisonment. If you don't comply, they can ban you from the store or call law enforcement but just putting a sign up does not give them any authority to restrain you physically. Also, in the Huffington Post article posted above, it says the woman was 500 yards from the store. In the cases that occurred in the United States both men were in the parking lot.

Well, for the bulldozing, that's what happens when you buy a home with no land rights. And hence why those homes are cheaper. It's a known risk when buying a home that if it doesn't come with the land rights, that's exactly what may happen. It isn't like out of the blue the government can destroy any building. — Well they could I guess but they don't really. It's all about whether the building comes with the land rights or not.

Because they don't at the Wal Mart near me. Only in the front by the registers.
I won't lie. I've stolen from there multiple times. And have never been caught.

Have lost interest half way through reading some peoples comments as they were irrelevent and downright offensive.
From personal knowledge, and not saying I know everything. When someone enters a store, they automatically agree upon the rules and regulations of the store, which includes the opening of bags when asked by staff.

Stealing, although a petty crime do in the long term causes a company to suffer substantial amount of monetary losses. The staff was simply doing their job, by making a citizens arrest. Although the beating which caused a death of someone was uncalled for and a criminal offence, Walmart should do all it can to help the police in finding out those responsible and be sure for them to suffer the consquences of their actions.

Personally I would like more information on this situation before commenting further.

@Comment by Qwerty, please do not make any comments in which may be seen as racism, it is NOT a typical Chinese reaction to anyone acting against authority. Were it so, I would have beaten up and murdered many people who I suspected of theft. Do not make assumptions upon a society through the actions of a few people.

However, I do sincerely hope the family of the deceased will be well compensated for their lost and for justice to be brough forth.

I'm not sure 100% about the prices, but theoretically they should be lower because of cheaper shipping costs. However, even after the manufacturing is done there is more to the price than manufacturing and shipping, many of the intellectual property rights still put money in America's pocket.

So even if an Ipod is made in China, the parts come from different countries, including Japan who gets a cut, and the intellectual property rights go back to America and we get a cut. etc.

China has really poor intellectual property rights laws and many people there sell pirated movies for way cheaper than Blockbuster can compete with.
