@Assunta – I don't think you realise how much status is in these countries. Eloping isn't socially acceptable, and is frowned upon normally.

Also, I know for certain that in India you can get woman who will come to run around screaming at the top of their lungs, beating their chests loudly, and pulling out their hair (all signs that the person who died was important, loved, and of higher status).
