Balloon Dress Popularity on the Rise

Fashionistas drop big dollars for “investment pieces”, or clothes that will be stylish throughout time. But who would spend hundreds on an item that could literally only be worn once?

Balloon designers such as Steven Jones and Katie Laibstain sell one-of-a-kind single-wear pieces for up to $2000. The designers showed their wares at the Kim Tom Clown Festival Fashion Show (what a name) in Shanghai, China.

Creations such as the wedding gown above can take up to twelve hours to structure. Each gown consist of roughly 300 molding balloons, which are 60 inches long and two to three inches thick.

Demand for such airy attire is on the rise, with Laibstain and Jones getting requests for bikinis, crop tops, and prom gowns.

“Balloon clothes are ultra chic. They are the finest couture available,” said Laibstain. “They may not always be easy to get into, but there are so many creative ways to take them off – pop, pop, pop!”
