The DMZ is the MOST heavily land-mined real-estate on the planet. The animals that live there have sorted out what is bad, animals that go ...BOOM!!!...don't have babies, and what isn't. The American presence is for economic and social support reasons. If the north tried to attack they would get their head handed to them on a platter. The leaders know this.
They want to keep their "fiefdom" intact so they will bluster and saber-rattle but in the end behave. Most other communist economies are collapsing from the inside. It doesn't work. It is just a matter of time and the same will happen to North Korea.
I hope the outstanding and unique animal preserve will be maintained in some form in the future. I have been to visit it twice, 2000 and 2009, and this time the water-deer are are visible from the road and the wild pigs are getting bold enough to tear up the local's grass rooting for snacks(late at night). It would be a shame to loose what has recovered so well to industrial creep.
Family is THE MOST important thing to Koreans as a people and hopefully that will be the driving factor when the time comes to sort out that slice of land. That and clearing all those mines will take years just to make it safe.

Peace

The way North Korea is headed they may starve off their people and leave the entire nation as a wildlife preserve. Sad but possibly inevitable.

At ludawg: I think at this point it's a matter of mutually assured destruction. South Korea has progressed too much for it to want to compromise itself, and the north now has nuclear capability... a war would be ridiculously disastrous, and will probably never happen.

At everyone else: Why are most of the comments here so retarded? Well.. I think a wild life preserve in that area is a decent idea.
