Cold Onlookers Encourage Man to Kill Himself

Why is it that the cold always seems to bring out the worst in people.

In Changchun, China, Mao Yung, a 28 year-old man, stood in the freezing cold on top of an eight story building, contemplating whether or not to commit suicide by jumping to his death.

Six hours later, commuters, who were stuck on the closed down bridge, finally had enough and began yelling for Mao to hurry up and jump.

“Jump, quick! It’s so cold. We’re all here to watch you.”

Police finally managed to pull the man to safety, but were disgusted by the attitude of the crowd.

Reverse psychology was maybe at the crowd’s mind at that time. It works then. :)

Well, you have to first realize that this happened in China. Land of a billion people. 1 guy dead doesnt matter, especially if he wants to off himself. Only in America does everybody kick and scream and make a big fuss because some criminal was shot by a cop at a transit station. Anywhere else in the world the cop would have been a hero for taking a criminal off the streets.

Yet I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that this could happen just as easily in America if some dumbass was threatening to jump off the Brooklyn bridge, halting the traffic.

China has nothing on Seattle, at least:

Even the city bus drivers were taunting the jumper.

    Mob mentality at its finest.

See the link above? It happened in America too. Also, why don’t you kill yourself first? China will follow afterward.

Ok, if i had not lost all faith in humanity all ready, this is the kicker. Believe it or not it’s not really even from the story either, mostly for the comments. The story is horrid but at least it’s believable.

All the comments i see on this site, as well as most others break down to:
People using religion/racism to proclaim hate.
People telling others to kill themselves out of sadistic mind-sets.
People being cold and not caring even though this is serious.
    People making “ur mom” jokes.
And a few good comments that everyone doesn’t care about.

This guys religion had nothing to do with it. He had people that would care about him. This guy was real and not just a sick joke.

The internet should have a driving test like with autos and maybe then people wouldn’t be such ignorant bigots as they seem to be, or they would be gone.

Its not a cultural thing-or a Chinese thing-you narrow minded people-to goad people into jumping, there are many cases of this globally happening. I don’t know why but in this situation people will shout to the sudicidel person to jump and hurry up with it as they need to “be places”. It happens everywhere, in fact just last year in Derby, England, an A level student commited suicide from a multi story car park (due to exam stress according to sources) my sister was in the area when it happened and the story caused outrage across the country as people were shouting to him to hurry up and just get it over and done with and after three hours he did jump. So stop getting on your high horses, learn a bit more about the world rather than making assumptions just because you have preconceptions of a culture. Psycgologists believe that this phenomenon is due to de-individuation, a crowd mentality similar to football hooliganism, however I don’t agree that there is an excuse.

Having been to China 4 times with my wife, a PRC citizen, I’ve noticed somewhat of a different mentality in the Chinese. Perhaps it is because there are so many people there or perhaps it is the result of the rampant human rights abuses they suffer at the hand of their government, but they seem to value human life less than I. The government notoriously cares little about their people and this seems to permeate the society. I’m not sure of relevance to this incident.
