$1000/35 grapes. …………….I don't see the correlation.
The guy obviously really really wanted the grapes.. and had obviously enough money to not care about spending money on grapes.

Yes, people value really good fruit here very highly. I bought a $100 dollar basket of fruit for my host family when I was a student here and they were thrilled.
