Waitress Sues Co-Worker Over ‘Looking for Death’
A Taiwan waitress is suing one of her work colleagues because he had given her the nickname ‘Looking for Death’.

“I felt I was being insulted all the time in public,” the woman, named Xu, told a court in Taipei City.
The colleague, Huang, did admit to coming up with the name, but claimed that it was all in fun and that he never intended to upset Xu.Â
The judge told the court that he would feel insulted if he was called ‘Looking at Death’ and ruled in Xu’s favor ordering Huang to pay around $620 in compensation.
Huang was also told to stop using the nickname.

Sounds like America where people sue for no good reason at all, like suing McDonalds for getting fat. Come on! Stop wasting time and money and supporting lawyers!

I happen to live in Taiwan, and this issue, here, is nothing like suing McD’s over getting fat. Chinese culture is dominated by the idea of “face”, and being referred to in public by an insulting nickname, even in jest, can be a VERY hurtful and serious matter.
Much closer to your local newspaper publishing your photo under the headline “Local Man Wants Sex With Children”
You would absolutely sue for slander (well..assuming it weren’t true), and you would feel perfectly justified in doing so.
This woman got a pittance in damages, but more importantly, she regained some measure of face for standing up to her tormenter and having the court order him to stop.

You can’t harrass your co-workers with insulting nick-names!
I’m glad the courts worked to protect her.

Lame story. It would have been better if they told us why he gave her that nickname.

Avi is absolutely correct, except I was to believe it is typical in almost any culture of the orient. I figure it is comparable to Sexual Harassment policies, stateside. Dallas has the right idea though.
