Anti-Prostitute guarantee leads to wife’s victory

A court in Hubei Province recently upheld a letter of guarantee a husband had written to his wife, granting her a divorce and ordering her ex-husband to pay her 100,000 yuan ($12,820) as compensation.

Wang Jun married Li Hong in 1999 and wrote a letter to her in 2003 promising not to visit prostitutes under penalty of paying compensation if he ever visited a prostitute.

But Wang, a businessman in Wuhan, the provincial capital, broke his commitment and visited a prostitute last year. When Li learned her husband had been unfaithful, she sued, seeking compensation and a divorce.

When Li showed Wang’s letter of guarantee, the Hanyang District People’s Court ruled in her favor.
