Underwater Mailbox still collected regularly

Off the coast of a small town in Wakayama prefecture, you can find an underwater mailbox – and it’s really in operation! This mailbox is actually considered part of Susami’s postal system and mail is collected every day. On occasion there can be up to 200 pieces of mail to collect in peak times.

Susami is over a hundred kilometres away from Osaka in a not very densely populated but a highly mountainous part of Kinki. This attraction is clearly an attempt at getting tourist dollars, but Susami is onto a winner, as it attracts the scuba divers.

Seriously, if you wanted to get in the news why not make something underwater that will really spark interest… something like underwater astronomy meetings?
